Upstart Costco rival turns an LA office building into a grocery store

The City of Industry, in the San Gabriel Valley due east of downtown Los Angeles, is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a city that houses more than 3,000 businesses and a mere few hundred residents. In fact, more than 90% of the city’s zoning is dedicated to commercial ventures, mostly manufacturing and trade logistics. But sandwiched in between the hulking buildings and corporate headquarters of brands like Hot Topic is a real diamond in the scrap heap for keen-eyed food lovers.

Located in what appears to be a former office building, Resco Food Service is a Costco-like megastore stocking over 5,000 items, some of which tower down on shoppers from high, shrink-wrapped pallets on scaffolding-like shelves. Resco even offers a $20 yearly membership option — with discounts and access to special deals — though the wide aisles filled with Asian ingredients, snacks and sauces as far as the eye can see are also available for public perusal.

Resco is a relatively new addition to the city, having just opened its doors in January 2024, but it’s already making waves across greater LA. The unglamorous grocery store has more than 38,000 Instagram........
