Hope and pride in country part of Canada Day celebration

Canada Day was celebrated, hopefully with honour and dignity, hope and pride, recognizing how we got here, what we have accomplished and acknowledging our mistakes and commitment to do better.

Hopefully, we also had fun, partied, barbecued, paraded, flag-waved and fire-worked until the wee hours – safely. With the temperatures in the dangerous high range some of us chose, or were forced, to stay indoors, hydrating and cooling, as proud of our country but celebrating in less rambunctious ways.

Although we still have King Charles as our head of state he has no power in Canada. It took a long time to achieve total sovereignty and I hope we are all grateful to live here.

We earned the right to self-governance in 1867, legal autonomy in 1931 and full constitutional independence in 1982 after many compromises were made. Many proud Canadians still appreciate our European heritage.
