A Scribe’s Musings: Volunteers read to Aldborough students

Dozens of Aldborough public school students in kindergarten through Grade 2 enjoyed 10 stories read animatedly to them by librarians and guest readers on April 15.

The volunteer readers each read one book in a morning session, and then another in the afternoon. That’s a lot of wonderful, beautifully illustrated books!

Congratulations to the students, their teachers and educational assistants, for the attentive listening, questions and the gratitude expressed to the adult readers.

A great vote of thanks to teacher-librarian Jennifer Rispin and library staff Amber Giles and Janet Given for organizing this annual Blue Spruce class reading program and selecting the books.

After all the students had heard all 10 books, they voted for their favourites.

The Great Dinosaur had the most votes, with Fox and the Mystery Letter coming in a close second. The Beat of the Dragon Boat and The Weedflower were also strong contenders.

Thanks to our community readers, three from the West Elgin Fire Department, and several others, all of whom are heavily involved in volunteering in our community.

Reading books to and with children is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Children need to see our interest and hear our enthusiasm to learn that reading is fun and fabulous.

All of these children have received free books over the past two years from the Kiwanis Club of Rodney’s literacy program. Please get those books out and read them together, today!

Larry Schneider is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rodney.
