Last week, I recounted the story of the Ploughboy, a steamer built in Chatham by J.M. McDermott for William and Walter Eberts in 1851. I got the information for that column from a John C. Carter book I purchased recently.

I have had another book about that ship in my collection for many years. My copy of The Ploughboy and the Nightingale, by Doris Parkin Keil, bears an inscription saying I received it from the Kent Regiment of the IODE as part of a Grade 13 history award.

Yes, I was a history geek even then. In fact, I switched high schools in Grade 13 (1975) from CKSS to CCI because they were launching a local history course.
