Memories of 25 years working at a detox facility

I drove by Holmes House in Simcoe today and it hit me. I’ve been retired from the most amazing years of my life for a decade and a half. 

Twenty-five years spent in an office protected by a pair of double-paned windows that took up an entire wall.

The windows were guarded by wooden rails to prevent things being thrown through by somebody who suddenly realized that they didn’t want to get sober after all.

In all the time I was there it never happened although there were close calls. 

Most of our clients were too sick to even contemplate violence and were often just grateful to be there, most of them.
