Reflections: Walter Knox and Perth County's sport legacy
The Listowel native earned approximately 400 first-place finishes during his track and field career
Sports have long played a significant role in the history of Perth County. This legacy is reflected in the many talented athletes who have emerged from communities across the county. Notable examples include hockey legend Howie Morenz from Mitchell, accomplished softball player Lori Sippel from St. Paul’s, swimmer Julia Wilkinson from Stratford, and track and field athlete Walter Knox from Listowel. Together, these individuals highlight the strong sporting tradition that continues to thrive throughout Perth County.
In the early part of the 20th century, Walter Renwick Knox was regarded as one of Canada’s most accomplished track and field competitors. At the height of his career, he was widely considered among the finest all-around athletes in the world. Born in Listowel on Jan. 23, 1878, to William and Joan (Cranston) Knox, he spent the first 15 years of his life there before his family relocated to Orillia.

Knox’s athletic achievements were remarkable. At the 1907 Canadian Track Championships, he captured five national titles in the 100 yards, pole vault, shot put, long jump and discus.
