Reflections: Goderich's 1926 Grand Tattoo attracted thousands of Perth County residents

The 1926 Dominion Day celebration began with a parade and concluded with the massed band performance and fireworks

A hundred years ago, people across Perth County were talking about the Grand Tattoo being held in Goderich on July 1, 1926.

Residents travelled to the town by automobile or bus to take part in the Dominion Day celebrations held there. While smaller picnics and community gatherings took place elsewhere within Perth County, the Grand Tattoo was the main celebration of the day and attracted the majority of those looking to mark the occasion. Musical entertainment was provided by local bands from Brodhagen, Mitchell and Stratford, whose performances were enjoyed by the large crowd.

A report published in the July 2, 1926, edition of the Stratford Beacon-Herald recounted the festivities, describing a successful and well-attended event:

“A crowd of approximately 4,000 persons heeded the advice, ‘Strike for Goderich,’ and spent Dominion Day there. Cars brought hosts of visitors and the Stratford-Goderich bus service worked to capacity to handle the increased traffic. The great numbers seeking meals resulted in a bread famine, one café being forced to close its doors in the midst of........
