There’s closure on reopening S.F.’s Great Highway, at least for a few months

The effort to reopen the Great Highway is closed — for now.

Sunset Supervisor Alan Wong needed signatures from three colleagues on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to place a measure on the June ballot asking city voters whether they want to reopen the Great Highway to cars on weekends and repeal what they approved in 2024.

By Tuesday’s 5 p.m. deadline, Wong could only muster the support of Supervisors Connie Chan and Chyanne Chen, but not Supervisor Shamann Walton, who told the Chronicle in September that he’s “100% behind going back to the ballot” to reopen the Great Highway to car traffic.

So, what gives?

“There’s definitely a multilayer level of politics involved,” political consultant David Ho told me.

Walton said in a statement Tuesday that Wong’s initiative was “not well thought-out, introduced at the last minute and constantly changing.”
