For eight years, Gavin Newsom used the California governor’s office as a prominent platform to fight President Trump and raise his own national profile. On Tuesday night, a Democratic Party tsunami helped buoy his presidential hopes and deliver a rebuke to Trump as Newsom handed the governorship off to his successor with an eye on a bigger prize.
Democrat Xavier Becerra was elected California’s next governor, soundly defeating Trump-backed Republican Steve Hilton, 65% to 35% with 49% of the votes counted. Newsom has said he would defer to fellow Californian Harris and forgo a presidential bid if she jumps in the race. Perhaps that promise is less certain after such a dramatic Democratic midterm rout – and Newsom wasn’t the only one to make it. (Sen. Jon Ossoff, a newly minted Democratic star, also disavowed any interest in the runup to his Georgia Senate victory, a promise that........
