When we discuss neurodivergence, the conversation almost always gravitates toward Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). For clinicians and self-advocates alike, these diagnostic pillars offer vital language, community, and validation. Yet, a significant clinical population remains in the shadows: individuals who present with severe sensory processing differences but do not meet the diagnostic thresholds for ASD or ADHD. Not to mention the numerous learning disabilities like dyslexia, dyscalculia, and more. For those navigating this gray area, the lack of formal recognition in manuals like the DSM-5-TR creates a profound paradox. They experience a nervous system that is fundamentally differently wired—the very definition of neurodivergence—yet they lack the formal diagnostic keys to access understanding, community, and targeted care.
