You might have heard the term “philosophical counseling” before, or maybe not. It might seem like a new approach to counseling, but actually it’s as old as philosophy itself. The ancient Greek philosophers saw philosophy not only as an educative activity but also as a kind of therapy for the soul. It helped to ease suffering, develop personal integrity, encourage self-mastery, create justice, and cultivate human flourishing. Philosophy, for the ancients, was a wholly practical endeavor — a “way of life.”
It's true that philosophy in the modern era has become more and more academic as a discipline — more abstract, more esoteric, and more focused on theory disconnected from lived experience.
