Journaling in College: A Low-Tech Mental-Health Enhancer
When it comes to mental health in general, one essential practice that I recommend for everyone is journaling. Studies have found that journaling improves mood, reduces stress and increases self-awareness—some of the main mental health goals for college students.
Journaling involves writing down our thoughts, goals, positive messages, experiences, and more, so we can reflect on them and keep track of them. The act of life review and naming aspirational goals strengthens learning and positive messages in our brain. Referring back to what we have written helps us practice new learning. Journaling is about our own self-expression and self-awareness, and what matters is the process of transforming our thoughts into written words.
