Back to school will be fast approaching, and thousands of young people are heading to college for the first time in the fall. As a college professor for over thirty years and the author of the new college guide, The Complete U: Over 100 Lessons for Success in and out of the College Classroom, I want to offer you some things you might consider doing during the first month of school.
Locate one employee of the school, perhaps a faculty member, advisor, staff member, or a coach with whom you feel comfortable talking, so that if anything arises you have a place to go.
If your school holds a fair to learn about campus clubs and organizations, be sure to attend it. Then, make it a priority to join at least one club or student organization. If you are interested in creating something that does not yet exist, be sure to meet with people who work in student affairs to share your idea and to see what’s possible.
Attend all of your classes. Show up, participate, and engage.
