Why Should We Care Psychological Safety?

Psychological safety is not just about being nice.

Psychological safety does not mean lowering standards.

Psychological safety benefits both employers and employees.

Psychological safety has become a popular workplace term, but what does it actually mean?

The official definition is the belief that you will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes. It means team members believe they can take interpersonal risks without being shamed by others.

My favourite definition is simpler:

It’s okay to not be okay.It’s okay to make mistakes.And it’s okay to speak up and disagree.

You can go through your workday without constantly worrying that you will be punished, embarrassed, or humiliated for saying the wrong thing. Most organizations now understand that they need to keep employees physically safe. The next step is to recognize that........
