A new U.S. federal plan focuses on combating the “overprescription” of psychiatric medications.

Public figures have contributed to the persistent stigma of taking what are often life-saving medications.

The government can provide meaningful help to those with serious mental illness by funding supportive housing.

In May 2026, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a plan to address the country’s mental health crisis. It focuses on combating the “overprescription” of psychiatric medications as part of an effort to “shift the standard of care toward prevention, transparency and a more holistic approach to mental health.”
