Reading give us the advantage of learning concepts.

Books have played an important part in my life. So I was taken aback when a young cop I know said he doesn’t read. Not that he can’t read; obviously he can since he made it through the police academy. Rather, he prefers information and entertainment via podcasts, audiobooks, PowerPoint and video presentations. I failed to convince him that he was missing a great deal by shunning books.

I thought about him as Gallup and the Bureau of Labor Statistics report that Americans spend less time reading than ever. This is substantiated by teachers who say they must assign shorter texts because students struggle to complete longer assignments; perhaps their students cannot remain focused. Social media doesn’t require attention; it asks only for fleeting attention.
