OLE HAMMARLUND: Missing the Purity from former P.E.I. dairy

Last year, Prince Edward Island’s Purity Dairy was sold to ADL. I believe Purity was one of the last small dairies on P.E.I. There used to be many, but eventually they were all absorbed into the ADL co-operative, a very successful co-operative owned and operated by the P.E.I. farmers that supply the milk from their cows.

Big is clearly better in terms of processing, dairy products. When I was an MLA, I had the pleasure of touring both a modern dairy farm as well as the ADL dairy facilities in Summerside. They are very impressive and look perfectly poised for competing nationally.

But wait. The Purity dairy they absorbed was not just another small dairy. Tom Cullen, the owner was always interested in doing something progressive and new. He developed an award-winning sour cream consisting of just cream and the bacterial culture and the Purity heavy cream, which unlike most other products in the super market contains JUST cream. Tom had also just developed his own oat milk, to serve those people who prefer dairy free products. So, we........
