COMMENTARY: UPEI decision to demolish squash courts would destroy the sport in P.E.I.

With one decision, the University of Prince Edward Island appears poised to destroy a sport in Prince Edward Island. It is a move that will be quickly met with at least one, and possibly two, legal interventions.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

The sport in question is the internationally booming sport of squash, slated to enjoy its Olympic debut in 2028. UPEI has two of the four regulation squash courts in Charlottetown, which the university has plans to demolish in the coming weeks.

Without these two courts (four is required for any sanctioned tournament), Prince Edward Island and UPEI will have to cancel their hosting of the 2026 Atlantic Squash Championships. Further, UPEI will be eliminated from hosting the new Atlantic Canada University League,  beginning in Halifax on Oct. 2, with tournaments to follow (for now) at UPEI and in New Brunswick.

This is sad news for the UPEI squash club,  which has grown to nearly 50 students, and who would have represented UPEI in the Atlantic University League,  and ultimately the Canadian National University........
