CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to the P.E.I. government for charging couple exorbident fee

Jeers to the provincial government for charging a Hazelbrook couple $12,900 for records related to a construction and demolition dump near their home. Doug and Robin Jenkins learned in January 2025 they shouldn’t drink their water because it had been contaminated by forever chemicals. Instead of voluntarily providing them with records and information they requested to find out more about the contamination, the province slapped them with a hefty freedom of information request bill. Health Canada has linked forever chemicals to a variety of health impacts, and the couple is understandably concerned about what impact the contamination will have on them. To add insult to injury, the province told the Jenkinses it will take until March 2027 to provide the records. That’s 20 months after they sent their request. Meanwhile, the couple continues to wait, knowing they have been exposed to chemicals that could be doing them harm.
