Bird populations rebounding in the Kawarthas

The main speaker at the Kawartha Lakes Steward Association on Saturday, May 23 was Warren Dunlop.

Warren’s presentation was entitled “Observing the Wings of Change, Bird populations in the Kawarthas.” His message was fairly upbeat referring to bird populations in the Kawarthas such as heron, loon, ospreys, and cormorants which were challenged in the 60s and the 70s but are doing fairly well now.

As a quick summary, waterfowl, birds of prey, and wetland birds are doing better since the 70s. Marine birds and forest birds are stable. Grassland birds are doing very poorly.

Within the waterfowl group trumpeter swans were eliminated from Ontario in the 1880s due to overhunting and habitat loss.

What is more exciting than seeing one of these big birds arriving or departing the water? According to Dunlop a recovery program was established in the mid-1980s and the species was successfully reintroduced at........
