Remembering Young Canada Day hockey in Peterborough in 1968
Last Saturday, Hockey Day in Canada Day sponsored by Scotiabank was celebrated by many communities.
As early as 1958, Peterborough’s two minor hockey associations, the Peterborough Minor Hockey Association (PMHA) and the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League (PCCHL) held annual Young Canada Day events at the Peterborough Memorial Community Centre.
In the 1966-67 season, I remember suiting up for the Trentway Bus Lines PCCHL Peewee all-stars for the first time at the Young Canada Day event. Our team was coached by Fred Garvey Sr. We defeated Etobicoke by a score of 6-0. Fred Garvey Jr. scored five goals and Steve Casey added a single marker. I clearly remember it being a big hockey event which drew several hundred spectators throughout the day, including family, friends, and hockey organizers.
