Seek justice for Afghan women at upcoming event
Seeking Justice for Afghan Women and Girls is the theme of a fundraising event presented by the Peterborough chapter of Right to Learn Afghanistan, Saturday, Nov. 15 from 2 until 4 p.m. at Emmanuel United Church, 534 George St. N.
“There will be a showing of short videos and talks explaining the terrible injustices now faced by Afghan girls and women and what Right To Learn Afghanistan is doing to help,” says member Melodie McCullough. “Hear from a young woman, now making her home in Peterborough after needing to flee Afghanistan. She promises to demonstrate a traditional Afghan dance.”
Beautiful jewelry, handcrafted and donated by Dorothy Dyck especially for the Peterborough chapter, will be available for purchase. These earrings, men’s and women’s bracelets, necklaces, and lanyards for glasses are individually designed and made with natural semi-precious stones mounted on stainless steel hooks, and gift wrapped with a description of each stone and its properties.
Embroidered Afghan items and Red Pashminas will also be for sale. There will be a Silent Auction with lots of gift ideas for the holiday season.
Refreshments will be available.
Right To Learn Afghanistan is a not-for-profit organization with nine chapters across Canada raising funds for the education of women and girls in Afghanistan. It is an official partner with UNESCO.
Tickets for the event cost $20 (or pay what you can), and are available in advance or at the door. For further information email Daphne at peterborough@RightToLearn.ca.
