1947: BIRTH OF A NATION-STATE

The creation of Pakistan marks a watershed moment in twentieth-century history, achieved despite monumental challenges and staggering obstacles. These hurdles were overcome through a protracted socio-political struggle spearheaded by the All-India Muslim League (ML) under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Quaid). This mission faced intense opposition from British colonial authorities, fierce political rivalry from the Indian National Congress (INC), internal factions within the Muslim community, and severe logistical and humanitarian crises. A selection of these impediments is elaborated below, lest they be forgotten by posterity.

First; Led by Gandhiand Nehru, the INC claimed to represent all Indians, including Muslims. It advocated for a united India, vehementlyrejected theTwo-Nationstheory of the MLand called it a British plot to divide and rule. TheQuaid exposed these claims by turning the ML into a mass-appeal political party. Consequently,the League won all the Muslim seats in Central Legislative Assembly and 86% of the Muslim seats in the provincial assemblies, inthe pivotal 1945–46 general elections. This overwhelming democratic mandate, crushed the Congress narrative, proving bothto the British and the world, that the ML was the sole representative of Indian Muslims.

Second; The British government was initially opposedto the idea of partitionand Viceroys Linlithgow and later Wavell, preferred to leave behind a united India that could serve as a strategic ally in Asia, after World War II.
