When mercy is stronger than revenge The case for compassionate leadership
In today’s turbulent world, leadership often finds itself torn between enforcing authority and embracing compassion. The teachings of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA), who led a divided community, offer timeless wisdom on leading with both justice and mercy, values that remain relevant even after fourteen centuries.
After Hazrat Usman ibn Affan’s (R.A.) period, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A.) took the responsibility of guiding a growing community through unrest. One of his key decisions was appointing new governors, including Malik al Ashtar, who was sent to Egypt. The Imam sent Malik a letter emphasizing the importance of governance based on justice, mercy, and care for the people.
In his letter, the Imam wrote, “Amongst your subjects, there are two kinds of people, either your brother in faith or your equal in humanity. Mistakes are committed, deliberately or accidentally.........
