Operation Bunyan al-Marsus: Rewriting rules of engagement

PAKISTAN’S swift and decisive military operation, Bunyan al-Marsus, has been presented by many analysts as a defining moment in South Asian strategic dynamics. The operation delivered a multidimensional setback to India; politically, militarily, technologically and psychologically while simultaneously reinforcing Pakistan’s posture as a resilient and capable regional actor. From a political standpoint, the episode challenged India’s long-standing aspiration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to position itself as a major global power and a peer competitor to China. The outcome, in this view, complicated that narrative by exposing limits to India’s regional dominance. Militarily, Pakistan is said to have overcome a significantly larger adversary, despite India’s numerical superiority in both manpower and conventional war materiel. Technologically, the operation underscored Pakistan’s advancements in modern warfare capabilities, while psychologically, it reportedly delivered a blow to Indian public confidence, particularly given prior assertions of rendering Pakistan strategically irrelevant.

Prior to the escalation, Pakistan maintained a policy of restraint in the aftermath of the Pahalgam incident. Despite accusations, provocations and instances of military pressure from India, Islamabad opted for diplomatic caution. This restraint, viewed against the backdrop of historical tensions and perceived hegemonic ambitions in the region, was both notable and deliberate.
