Confusing outrage with hate earns no sympathy

Manhattan: To guest columnist Joshua M. Davidson (“Hatred’s global war against all Jews everywhere,” op-ed, March 22): You just don’t get it. In a half-page essay, Davidson decries the current state of antisemitism. Thankfully, he spares us the Bible quotes, but he does give us a history lesson going back to the 1960s. The problem to which Davidson is simply blind, or intentionally ignores, is Israel’s conduct in Gaza, where even Palestinian journalists have been killed, and now Lebanon and Iran.

Davidson specifically casts his arguments in the persona of “American Jews seeking solidarity with Israel.” Well, I’m an American Jew who seeks to distance himself from Israel. I am certainly not antisemitic. What is missing from Davidson’s missive is a single word, even a syllable, that acknowledges what three-fourths of the world’s nations, the UN and the International Court of Justice have labeled Israeli war crimes in Gaza. If he even went so far as to claim that there might have been some Israeli actions in Gaza that were against societal norms, he would have sparked the beginning of a constructive dialogue.

However, Davidson will never do that, and neither do any of those decrying antisemitism. As long as Israel’s crimes in Gaza are ignored or justified, there’s nothing to talk about. Steven Davies
