There are two types of gamblers. One plays the odds, hedges bets, stays cautious, wins incrementally over time. The other plays fast and loose, bets big, risks it all every time. The latter is more fun. The former does better in the long run.

This approach can apply to politics too. So far, Zohran Mamdani has governed fast and loose. He’s fun, he’s flashy, he’s popular — a new Siena poll has him at 69% favorable. He plays to the base, collects new Instagram followers like quarters from a loose slot machine, and keeps doubling down on the issues he rode to City Hall: taxes should go up, Israel is bad, everything should be free.

The question is whether that’s the right strategy over the long term. The mayor has done some good things — didn’t fire Jessie Tisch, wrote a housing plan, made some solid operational appointments, stood next to Gov. Hochul as she funded childcare.
