Isaac King attacked the victim after they had an argument on Norwich's Magdalen Street, near the flyover.

Norwich Crown Court was told the screwdriver had come out of the other side of the man's nose and left him bleeding for seven hours.

King, who was 17 at the time, had been sitting on a bench with his girlfriend when he saw the victim and approached him.

Victory Abang, prosecuting, said King took something from his waistband before he "lunged towards the victim's face with his right hand in a stabbing motion".

The court heard the weapon "went through his nose and out the other side" resulting in the victim "bleeding for about seven hours".

King then ran off following the stabbing, which happened shortly after 6.30pm on January 8 this year in front of a number of people, including some waiting for a bus nearby.

The prosecutor said the victim was seen by members of the public with "a face full of blood".

The court heard the victim made no statement although he told police he believed the weapon used to stab him was a screwdriver. The item has never been recovered.

King later told a family friend he had  "stabbed a Nitty", a slang term for a drug user.

The woman then reported the incident to police who later found a "considerable amount of blood by a bench".

King, of Ryefield Road, Mulbarton, was later arrested - along with a teenage girl - on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He appeared for sentencing on Wednesday (March 25) after previously admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and possession of a bladed article.

The teen had also admitted another assault occasioning actual bodily harm relating to an attack on a man who was kicked and punched in Eaton Park, Norwich in May last year.

Judge Anthony Bate said it had been an "unpleasant incident" involving a man was "entitled to go about his business in the city unmolested".

But taking into account King's age, his mental health difficulties and credit for his pleas, Judge Bate imposed a sentence of six months detention in a Young Offenders' Institution (YOI).

Michael Clare, mitigating, said King was an immature and "academically disadvantaged" teenager who was 17 at the time.

He said the teenager's family have "rallied round" following King's first taste of custody over the past few weeks.

He insisted he was "naive and impressionable" and followed others into crime.

Mr Clare said there was "no lasting harm" caused by the injury.

No further action will be taken against the teenage girl who was arrested.
