Drivers facing empty pumps at forecourts across Norfolk as fuel prices rise

The rising price of fuel shows the impact of the disruption to supplies caused by the Iran conflict in the Middle East.

Motorists have reported a lack of fuel at filling stations in the county over the last few days, including Tesco Extra in Dereham, Tesco Express in Earlham Road, Norwich, and the Sainsbury's in Attleborough.

People even reported the Tesco in Dereham had to temporarily close its forecourts on Tuesday morning (March 31) due to the issue.

It comes as the average pump price of a litre of unleaded petrol in the UK stood at 148.8p on Monday, up 4.6p week on week and a jump of 16.6p, or 13pc, since March 2, according to figures published by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ).

This is the highest price for unleaded petrol since May 2024.

The average price of a litre of diesel stood at 176.5p on Monday, up 9.6p week on week and an increase of 34.4p, or 24pc, since March 2.

It is the highest price for diesel since December 2022.

In Norfolk, petrol prices range roughly from 136p per litre at the cheapest stations up to around 170p for the most expensive.

Diesel is nearly 200p per litre at some pumps.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Compared to the start of the Iran conflict, it costs £10.55 more to fill up a typical family car that runs on petrol, and £21.35 more for a comparable diesel car.

“The financial strain on the eight in 10 motorists that tell us they depend on their cars continues to build, and at a particularly rapid rate for those who drive diesel vehicles.”
