Norwich City Council was awarded the sum by Homes England to enable its purchase of the site and the cost of razing it.

But the authority is required to meet a tight deadline and has to move fast to reduce the risk of the grant expiring before work is completed.

Despite this, demolition will not begin in earnest for several months while the council makes arrangements to relocate businesses.
