People out in the city had thought the number deaths would be in the hundreds, with one person guessing 200.

But they were stunned to discover that the figure was much lower, with three people killed on city roads between April 1 2025 and March 31 of this year.

An FOI requested by this newspaper also showed that in the previous year, no one had died while two had died the year before.

People say they expected the number to be higher due to poor road infrastructure, speeding motorists and drivers exhibiting a lack of awareness.

Richard Culling, who was sitting with friends on the market, highlighted the roads across the city are in need of improvement since the number of drivers on them is also increasing,

He said: "I do not have a clue how that number is so low. I imagine the number of people who have been injured in road traffic accidents is a lot higher though.

"One of the worst places is in the avenues where the roads are so narrow."

John Faben, a friend of Mr Culling's, said there are too many roadworks in the city and it causes people to become impatient.

David Browne, who is a motorcyclist, said another issue which he regularly witnesses that led to his guess of 175, is a lack of awareness from drivers.

He said the number of younger drivers who check their phones while driving or when they are stuck in traffic is on the rise.

He also described a separate instance where a driver did not indicate correctly. He said: "I was recently following a driver, who indicated left but turned right."

Alfie McComb, dad of three, said emergency services and the police were doing a "brilliant job" at keeping the number so low.

He said: "Well done to them and their response times for helping keep that number down."

On Christmas Eve of 2025, one pedestrian had died on Barrack Street after being hit by a car.

Nicolae Brica, 47, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol.

He admitted to driving with excess alcohol and was due to be sentenced on February 25 but the case was adjourned until May 20.

Only a few days before then, on December 19, Pete Bambury had been walking on City Road when he was struck by a silver Nissan Qashqai and died from his injuries in hospital.

The driver of the Nissan, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Friends and family paid tribute to Mr Bambury, was a longstanding employee at Castle Quarter where he worked in security, describing him as a "a genuinely lovely guy" and "a great friend".

A few years prior, in 2023, Jose Da Silva Junior drove into Jane Blackwell, a swimming coach, and knocked her off her sports bike as they were both turning on to the road from Albemarle Road.

Da Silva Junior, 65, has been issued a two-year community order and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Chris Youell, prosecuting, said it was a "tragic" incident, adding the reason Da Silva did not see the cyclist remains "unknown" but it is "likely his focus was on the temporary traffic lights ahead".
