Objections continue to pour in over demolition plans for chippie

They fear the proposals to tear down the Rembrandt Restaurant and turn it into five flats and a Co-op would not be in keeping with Easton, a village near the showground.

The designs for the Dereham Road fish and chip shop sparked outrage among neighbours soon after they were revealed, which lead to the Easton Parish Council hosting an extraordinary meeting to hear their concerns.

Since then, more neighbours have come forward with objections.

One person writing to South Norfolk Council said: "In Easton, there are no apartment buildings and although becoming a larger residential area, the design and layout of all the new homes attempts to respect the village character.

"This proposal does not show alignment to the character of the original village in which it would be situated."

Another person said: "The proposal represents an overbearing and unneighbourly form of development, totally out of context with it surrounding, which fails to meet both national and local planning standards and I respectfully request that this application is refused."

But not everyone is against the plans - of the 23 who have objected, three have written to South Norfolk Council voicing their support.

One neighbour said: "This proposal will replace the existing building with a new, attractive mixed use development that meets an important local need.

"The convenient shop will provide everyday groceries and essentials within easy reach for residents, helping reduce the need to travel further for basic items. The development also includes five well-designed apartments, supporting much needed local housing."

The plans were put forward by AIM Capital Ltd along with bosses at the Co-operative Group.

According to their proposals, four of the flats will be one-bedroom homes, while one could include two bedrooms.
