By reducing roadside grass cutting and allowing greenery to thrive, not only would Norfolk County Council save money it would also help embattled wildlife.

But bosses at County Hall seem to have kicked this policy into the long grass after being stung by criticism over its scruffy verges.

The authority has announced it will increase the number of cuts it carries out by a third this year, in order to improve the state of its unkempt roadsides.

The action is also being taken to quell fears that views of drivers were being blocked by the out-of-control vegetation.

Cuts are only carried out for safety reasons and not for appearance, but the council has come under increased pressure to carry out more trims.

Now, following the string of complaints, a quarter of a million pounds is set to be spent on carrying out the extra cuts.
