Relationships crack in a world of instant gratification
New Delhi: How do relationships break? Mostly not just from any grand betrayal but more so from the silent erosion of often unmet expectations; where love and mutual respect often fails under the weight of unspoken demands and unshared truths. Much of the weight that we often carry is the very burden of our own expectations, and much of our heartbreak stems from the walls that we build around.
For example, parents expect their children to mirror their values, to carry forward a legacy that once defined their own sense of purpose. Often parents seek such an expectation as a validation of their own living. Children, in turn, seek freedom to chart their own paths, often in rebellion of the very traditions that their parents hold sky high. Come to think of it, in our own younger days, we have just done so.
Partners, in marriage or of any other relationship, expect each other to fulfil promises that were never fully spelt out, assuming love and chemistry alone can decipher the unsaid. Friends, too, demand unwavering loyalty, even in moments when life pulls them in different directions. And when these expectations don’t materialise, as they invariably do, relationships see harsher light leaving behind a void that is irreparable.
The world of today, especially in a rapidly changing society amplifies these stress points. The social context and unseen emotional threads that once bound generations are already free, if not split, under the weight of cultural elasticity and technology.........
