Cervical cancer: All FAQs answered by experts

New Delhi: Cervical cancer remains a serious public health concern for women, despite being one of the most preventable forms of cancer. Effective vaccines, screening tools, and treatments are available to prevent cervical cancer, but despite this, the disease takes the lives of thousands of women every year. The primary reasons for these preventable deaths are late diagnosis and inadequate awareness.

This paradox is most apparent in countries such as India, where social stigma, poor educational awareness, and unequal access to healthcare systems often prevent women from understanding the disease, recognising early symptoms, and seeking regular screening. As a result, cervical cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among indian women.

The link between cervical cancer and infection with high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is well established. In a majority of cases, cervical malignancies are associated with HPV infections, particularly Types 16 and 18.
