The Anant Singh Saga: How ‘bahubalis’ have shaped Bihar’s political tapestry
New Delhi: Bihar gangster and four-time former MLA Anant Singh was fired upon by 50 to 60 rounds of bullet while on a visit to Nauranga village of Mokama district on Wednesday afternoon. According to media reports, Singh was fired upon by his former proteges – Sonu Singh and his brother Monu Singh. The brothers worked for Anant Singh before he went to jail under Arms Act seven years ago, but gradually parted ways with him and formed their own gang. Mokama police has filed three FIRs in the case and is investigating the matter. While nobody is surprised by the sounds of bullets in Bihar, the attack on Bahubali Anant Singh, that too on his own perch, has surprised many – including politicians, police and criminals.
Known for his handlebar moustache and trademark tinted glasses, 59-year-old Anant Singh is a notorious gangster of Bihar and is facing 38 criminal cases, including seven cases of murder and 11 attempt-to-murder. A Bhumihar by caste, Singh is also called ‘chhote sarkar’ for being the youngest of four brothers. He began criminal activities from an early age and is today one of the most renowned gangster-turned politicians of Bihar.
Unlike in several parts of Bihar where animosity between upper castes and OBCs or Rajputs versus Yadavs has been the common story with the rise of RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in the 90s, the Mokama region is always known for skirmishes between the upper castes themselves. Ironically, it was Nitish Kumar, credited for taming criminals in Bihar politics, who first gave a ticket to Singh to contest assembly election on JD(U) ticket in 2005. In fact, Kumar failed to take any concrete action against Singh till he aligned with RJD after the 2015 assembly elections. Also, RJD conveniently forgot that the party once called for ‘Patna Bandh’........
