New Delhi: The New Delhi Assembly constituency, comprising Lutyens Delhi and part of New Delhi Lok Sabha is considered the most prestigious and prominent constituency of the national capital. The seat came into existence in 2008 after the delimitation exercise and was carved out of the Gole Market and Sarojini Nagar assembly constituencies. Prior to 2008, it was known as the Gole Market assembly constituency when the Union Territory of Delhi was declared the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the assembly elections were held in 1993.

One interesting fact about the New Delhi Assembly constituency or the Gole Market constituency is that the party which wins this seat goes on to form government in the state. In fact, barring the 1993 elections when BJP’s Kirti Azad won this seat and BJP formed the government under the leadership of Madan Lal Khurana, the candidate who wins the New Delhi constituency also ends up becoming the chief minister. The trend began in 1998 when Sheila Dikshit of Congress defeated Azad, and became the chief minister. She won this seat again........
