Nikhil Malhotra on why India needs its own Education LLM and future of sovereign AI

Tech Mahindra has launched an 8-billion-parameter Hindi-first education LLM under Project Indus in collaboration with NVIDIA. The model is designed to democratize high-quality learning in India, offering culturally grounded and scalable AI solutions for students across disciplines.

New Delhi: Project Indus is a large-scale project being launched by Tech Mahindra that includes a new education-orientated large language model (LLM), developed with NVIDIA. The model is created as a Hindi-first AI solution that will empower the Indian learning environment.

The new education LLM is designed in such a way that it facilitates scaled sovereign AI development based on the linguistic and cultural diversity in India. It aims at the democratisation of quality education where students are provided with stronger conceptual knowledge on subjects like physics and other academic subjects. The platform is positioning itself as a universal education use case solution in the country.
