Project Cheetah hits ‘half-century’: Kuno celebrates 5 new cubs as India’s Cheetah population surges to 53

This third litter for Jwala underscores the program's growing success in re-establishing cheetahs in India, demonstrating remarkable adaptation to the Kuno landscape and a significant win for wildlife conservation efforts.

Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh: India’s ambitious reintroduction program, Project Cheetah,” reached a historic milestone this Sunday as the total population of the world’s fastest land animal officially crossed the 50-mark on Indian soil.

The surge comes courtesy of a “high-five” from Namibian cheetah “Jwala”, who gave birth to five healthy cubs in her third successful litter.

Jwala, one of the original feline pioneers translocated from Namibia in 2022, has cemented her status as a “super mother” of the program. This latest delivery, which took place on March 9, 2026, marks her third litter in India. With these five new arrivals, the total number of cheetah cubs born in India has risen to 33, spread across ten successful litters since the project’s inception.
