New Delhi: England’s fast-bowling consultant Tim Southee has thrown his support behind skipper Ben Stokes’ decision to bowl first in the opening Test against India at Headingley despite the heavy criticism the move has drawn after a dominant batting display from the visitors.
On a dry-looking surface, England opted to field first after winning the toss- a call that backfired as Indian openers Shubman Gill (127*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) led the charge, guiding India to a commanding 359 for 3 by stumps on Day 1.
