Bangladesh Presidential election: MPs vote in first contested poll in 35 years

New Delhi: Bangladesh is voting to elect its 23rd president in the country’s first contested presidential election in 35 years, with ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir facing former army officer Oli Ahmed, the nominee of a Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party opposition alliance.

Voting began at the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh’s Parliament, at 2 pm on Thursday and is scheduled to continue until 5 pm. A total of 349 lawmakers are eligible to vote, with the Election Commission expected to announce the result after counting.
