General Asif Ghafoor — A Pakistan Army soldier so easily forgotten
New Delhi: Pakistan Army’s Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor’s illustrious military career began when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 87 Self Propelled (SP) Medium Regiment from the esteemed Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Kakul. He received a traditional welcome into the ‘Eighty Seventh’ Topkhana and quickly proved himself to be a bright young officer, excelling in his courses at the School of Artillery.

Ghafoor’s military expertise was showcased during the Kargil War, where he directed pinpoint artillery fire on Indian positions and troop movements along the National Highway. He also led his troops in fierce combat against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Operation SHERDIL in the Swat region of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
As part of the prestigious Military Operations Directorate (DGMO) at the General Headquarters (GHQ), Ghafoor was instrumental in planning operations against India.
His illustrious career, however, took a significant turn when he commanded the 21 Artillery Division, a crucial force-multiplier in the Southern Command of the Pakistan Army. As General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 21 Artillery Division, Ghafoor devised a comprehensive plan to target and degrade Indian forces in the event of war. As the GOC, he was based in Malakhand, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where the Divisional Headquarters was located and in his tenure, Ghafoor earned himself the reputation for being compassionate towards the general public while taking a firm stance against Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters.
