Opinion | Eulogising Hidma At India Gate: A Warning From The Campus Frontlines

A group of highly motivated university students turned a protest on air pollution in the national capital into a rally championing the cause of Maoist terrorism. Drawn from the ranks of certain ultra-Left campus organisations, these students assembled at the C-Hexagon – the site of the imposing India Gate.

But instead of adding lung power to the campaign of their cohorts, they began shouting slogans in favour of the de-facto Osama bin Laden of Maoist terrorists, who was recently slain in an encounter with security forces in the deepest recesses of India’s so-called ‘Red Corridor’. The terrorist in question is Hidma, who carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head and, who, during his three-decade reign, was part of at least 27 armed operations against the Indian state killing hundreds of soldiers.

The irony could not have been starker. The site of this eulogy to an implacable enemy of the state was within touching distance of the iconic Amar Jawan Jyoti, a monument to the valour of India’s soldiers who sacrificed their lives in defence of their motherland.
