Opinion | Punjab Sidelined In Carney’s India Visit: Who Is To Blame?

Khalistani extremist elements have repeatedly attempted to intimidate Prime Minister Carney and members of his cabinet.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced his upcoming visit to India. During the trip, he will meet with business leaders and political figures in Mumbai and New Delhi to discuss promoting trade and energy agreements between Canada and India. There are also ongoing discussions to finalise the bilateral Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) free trade negotiations, which have been in progress since 2010. Alongside India, Carney is also scheduled to visit Australia and Japan.

This visit is particularly significant because diplomatic relations between India and Canada had deteriorated over the past few years; however, Carney has taken it upon himself to put these relations back on track. Even during his election campaign, he made it clear that he sought a strong relationship with India. By extending an invitation to the Prime Minister of India for the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Carney demonstrated that he would not succumb to the pressure of Khalistani factions or their allied media. He signalled that his actions would be guided solely by the interests of Canada and the Canadian people.
