In a year, Mamata Banerjee’s government saw two incidents of rape inside government institutions — one inside a government hospital, where a young doctor was raped and killed by a member of Kolkata Police’s civic volunteer force, raised by Banerjee’s government, that mostly has Trinamool cadres in it.

Second was the one that occurred last week inside a government run law college, where a student was gangraped allegedly by students and an ex-student, who has been a leader of Trinamool’s youth wing and has several allegations of assaulting women levelled against him.

Even as the police, the administration and the party are busy battling public outrage over the gang rape, Kalyan Banerjee, a veteran MP, known to be one of Didi’s core committee member, in a public statement said that the survivor was raped by her ‘friends’ and there was no way that government could provide security in government college.
