Every movement needs a face. In Ladakh, that face has belonged to Sonam Wangchuk, whose fasts, campaigns and national profile pulled local concerns — environmental fragility, constitutional safeguards and genuine representation — into the country’s mainstream conversation. That visibility has value, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

But visibility has a cost that Ladakh is now paying. The rise of any single figure within a complex movement raises a hard question: at what point does personality-driven advocacy begin to weaken the very cause it claims to serve?

Wangchuk’s recent appearance alongside protests organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has raised fresh questions about the trajectory of his activism. These protests have themselves come under scrutiny because of allegations that certain groups associated with them seek to create unrest and instability in the country.
