Bangladesh’s present political fate faces profound challenges

It has been two years since Bangladesh’s July Uprising ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year political rule. Since July 2024, Bangladesh has seen two successive governments—one chosen by the leaders of the so-called ‘Uprising’, which subsequently became an interim government under the chief advisership of Muhammad Yunus; the other, a now democratically elected government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Thus, Bangladesh in 2026 is not under the leadership of earlier stalwarts and the ‘Battle of Begums’ has finally come to a halt. However, with the prominence and addition of other parties, especially the 11-party alliance, the political stadium now serves a fresh round of ideological battles. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since August 2024, has vowed to return to Bangladesh this December. That adds to the political uncertainty, raising an important question: Where does Bangladesh’s politics stand two years since the July Uprising?
