The Bangladesh Awami League, the party at the heart of Bangladesh’s founding and independence, marked its 77th anniversary on Monday with a sharp call for the restoration of democratic rights, the release of political prisoners, and an immediate end to what it calls a campaign of organised political persecution against its leaders and workers.

At the centre of the party’s renewed push is former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
