Opinion | Bhagwat In New York: Celebrating Hindu Universalism, Exposing Mamdani’s Smallness

With his universalist appeal of Sanatan Dharma, Bhagwat exposed Mamdani’s own exclusionary, Islamist-adjacent politics

Got Question about the News?

Not even once in his 41-minute speech at Madison Square Garden did RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat mention New York mayor Zohran Mamdani. Still, with each word, Bhagwat called out Mamdani’s bogey of accusing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of “exclusionary vision", which did not match the idea of a “pluralistic, secular" India he grew up with. Mamdani even regretted he could not ban the event because it was not in his jurisdiction.

With his universalist appeal of Sanatan Dharma, Bhagwat exposed Mamdani’s own exclusionary, Islamist-adjacent politics. His soft, universal line left many even from the Hindutva fold flummoxed or angry. They expected the leader of the world’s biggest Hindu organisation—arguably the largest non-governmental organisation on the planet—to be hard-hitting and confrontational against rising Hinduphobia.
