California Reps. Adam Schiff and Ro Khanna introduced the AI Ads Act last week, a bill to stop campaigns from using AI to “fraudulently misrepresent” opposing candidates. While nobody wants an arms race of politicians releasing hyperrealistic deepfakes of their opponents saying the N-word, the bill’s text is so broad that it would also ban clearly satirical use of AI. Could this have anything to do with X superstar Charles Curran’s ad campaigns for Steve Hilton and Spencer Pratt, which turned the latter into “Prattman,” facing off against a political rogues gallery of Karen Bass as the Joker and Gavin Newsom as a mad king? News flash, Ro Khanna: We don’t need AI to see that you and the rest of California’s politicians are DC supervillains. But those ads are vastly preferable to watching another politician yap while standing in a cornfield. I look forward to casting you as a moldy apple in my AI brainrot TikTok telenovela.
